Hindu Kush means: Hindu Slaughter
That's the answer to last week's trivia question.
The Hindu Kush is a part of the Himalayan Range but the beautiful region belies a very dark past where a countless number of Hindus had been wiped out of the area in 1000 A.D. paving the way to conquer Afghanistan and surrounding areas. The mountain region has since been known as Hindu Kush or Hindu Slaughter, so great were the killings. The death, oppression and violence suffered by the Hindus from the 8th Century to the present as a result of Islam's expansionist aims has been largely unrecognized and unnoticed by the West.
In April 2001, Francois Gautier wrote a piece on the subject lamenting the West's finally awakening to a problem with Muslim fundamentalism:
The West seems to have suddenly woken up to Muslim fundamentalism in South Asia when the Taleban demolished the Bamiyan statues, in spite of frantic appeals from all over the world. But there is a bit of hypocrisy in the outrage triggered by this destruction.
Mr. Gautier engages in wishful thinking that the West woke up after the destruction of the Buddhist monuments. If the West awoke, it quickly returned to sleep only to have Muslim fundamentalism briefly jar the West awake again less than six months later with the 9/11 attacks. Still, only a small but growing crowd of people have fully woken up to the threat Islam poses to the rest of the world.
Politically correct doctrine self-righteously accuses Westerners of being ethnocentric, and it's true. But the problem is not in that Westerners may see the world through their own cultural experience or may see their culture as superior; all societies do that. That is natural and, contrary to politically correct doctrine, some degree of ethnocentricity is healthy. The real problem with ethnocentrism is that Westerners have taken little interest in the details of history outside its own borders. This problem is much exascerbated by politically correct doctrine which precludes the possibility that non-Westerners could produce or hold to an evil or dangerous ideology. Without the ability to recognize non-Western produced ideology as playing a roll in wars and violence, Westerners are left with an incomprehensible mixture of sectarian/tribal rivalries with which to make sense of seemingly intractable problems.
The irony is that Westerners would take much more interest in the details of history and culture outside their borders if they were to remove their politically correct blinders because Eastern history would make so much more sense once the possibility of an evil expansionist religion is figured into the equation.
