Russia: Former Guantanamo Islamist Held in Nalchik
A report today from Mosnews states that Rasul Kudayev, a former detainee at Guantanao Bay, is being held for questioning in Nalchik.
Kudayev was one of 7 Russian citizens arrested by the US in Afghanistan, and held in Guantanamo Bay detention unit. In March last year he and the other six were handed over to the Russians. They were charged with illegal crossing of a state border, mercenary activities and participation in a criminal gang. In June, charges were dropped, and all were released.
Kudayev was arrested by local police in Nalchik, after they had questioned other suspects who had been arrested after the events of October 13, when Islamists laid siege to key public building in the capital city of Kabardino-Balkaria in the Caucasus. More than 100 people died in the attack
Kudayev has lived in Nalchik for the past 18 months. In August, it was reported that Kudayev had been kidnapped in the city. "People wearing balaclava masks and dressed in camouflage seized Kudayev in the presence of his mother and sister and took him to an unknown destination", the head of the Russian Islamic Committee, Geidar Jemal stated. He was released several days later.
Meanwhile, as a response to events in Nalchik, Beslan and the Nord-Ost, Mosnews reports that more Russians are now in favour of the death penalty for acts of terrorism. A recent poll has found that 65% of its respondents approved of the restoration of the death penalty, and only 17% wanted it abolished forever.
