Baghdad: Three Suicide Bombs Kill at Least Twenty
Three vehicle bombs have been detonated outside the Palestine Hotel in Firdouz Square, Baghdad, a hotel frequented by journalists. One of these bombs, involving a cement mixer truck, was caught on film shown a few minutes ago on UK TV, and it was massive. It was heard two miles away, according to ITN News.
A car bomb went off near the police station, 100 yards east of the hotel, and a third went off around the same time. According to the Guardian, shortly before the explosions, a truck came under fire nearby. The Pentagon has said that the attack came from vehicle bombs, and rockets launched near the outer walls of the Palestine hotel and the nearby Sheraton.
Elsewhere in the city, two civilian cars were attacked by gunfire, killing three municipal workers and a passer-by.
A US Marine from the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force was hit by small arms fire in Ramadi and killed on Sunday, raising the death toll of US military to 1997.
In the Baghdad neighbourhood of Shaab, a suicide bomber killed two Iraqis and wounded three. In western Baghdad, insurgents attacked an Iraqi military checkpoint, killing one soldier in the gunfire, and a girl standing in front of her home.
A policeman was killed and two wounded in another incident, a drive-by shooting.
