Canada: Islamist Suspect Suffers Visions
Earlier, we brought you news that four suspected Islamists were being transferred to a federal penitentiary. Now, it appears, the effect of being imprisoned, for a large part of that time in solitary confinement, is having its toll upon Mohamed Harkat, one of the four detainees.
Harkat, according to the Ottawa Citizen has had his psychiatric assessment filed with the Federal Court of Canada, as part of his bail assessment, which starts today. He is taking the stand today.
Psychiatrist Dr Colin Cameron states that Mr Harkat, who is awaiting deportation to his home country of Algeria, is having nightmares, in which he imagines his fingernails are being pulled out or his skin scraped off. He suggests Harkat should be given anti-depressant drugs.
A ruling in March this year by Judge Eleanor Dawson effectively declared Harkat to be an al-Qaeda terrorist, in accordance with an earlier Canadian government designation. The judge had access to files not available to the public.
Harkat's lawyer , Matthew Weber, has said that his client, who has ben detained since December 2002, should be released on bail. His client has lost 20 pounds during his custody. Apparently Harkat longs to be with his family, who reside in Canada.
In Britain, four suspected terrorists awaiting deportation were granted bail under similar circumstances. Three had tried to commit suicide, and one had said "spirits" had ordered him to take his own life.
