UK: Scotland Given Warnings on Islamist Attack
The Scotsman reports that Jim Brooks, a vice-president of London-cased security consultants Control Risks Group has warned that Edinburgh and Glasgow possess internationally famous targets which would attract terrorists. He said that terrorists will move their focus away from London to places seen as easier to target.
Professor Paul Wilkinson who heads the centre for the study of terrorism and political violence at St Andrews University, backed the warning:
"For al-Qaeda, any area where they can attack people they regard as infidels is an appropriate target. Also they are ruthless in targeting civilians and going where no-one would expect."A leaked document, revealed in today's Sunday Times has claimed that Blair's "War on Terror" is failing. The document, which originated from the government's delivery unit, the confidential report states that key policies to prevent al-Qaeda attacks and prevent terrorism taking hold in Britain are "immature" and "disjointed". Others are described as unrelated to the "real world" and no hope of developing. One suggestion is the creation of a new Minister responsible for enforcing counter-terror policies and strategy.
The 11 page review states that the anti-terror policy is bogged down in confusion with "little effective coordination", and having no clear leadership.
In other news, on Friday Scotland Yard apprehended 3 men yesterday, in connection with investigations into terror activities. The men, in their early 20s. were detained under the Terrorism Act 2000. One man was arrested in Chatham, Kent, and another in Shepherd's Bush, west London. Scotland Yard stated that thee were ongoing searches at these addresses, as well as at Paddington. No hazardous materials have been found. The third man walked into a police station voluntarily on Saturday and was then arrested. The arrests are not related to the terror attacks of 7/7.
