UK: Islamist Arrested After Claiming Links With 7/7 Cell

Man5.jpgThe News of the World today has an article on a UK-born Muslim who claimed he was asked to be the fifth man in the cell which attacked London Transport on 7/7, killing 52 people.

Imran Patel, in his early 30s, had told a News of the World reporter that he had undergone terrorist training in Pakistan, and had been invited to join the four suicide-attackers, Shehzad Tanweer, Jermaine Lindsay, Hasib Hussain and their leader Mohammad Siddique Khan. Patel, who claims he watched jihadist videos with the killers a few weeks before they carried out the atrocity, says he declined the offer to join the group on their mission, when they suggested that one of their targets should be a school.

Patel, who works as an auditor, did not inform police about their intentions as he claims he did not want to see Muslim "brothers" jailed. Patel boasted that he would never attack a UK target, even though he would partake in such a mission abroad.

He told the reporter that he went to Pakistan in September 2003 at the behest of a Dewsbury Mullah, and there underwent military training, sleeping in tents in the mountains. He says he was contacted by other Muslims who knew he was prepared to be a Jihadi. Patel claims he knows at least six other Muslims from Dewsbury, Yorkshire, who also went on similar training.

He met 30-year old Khan through one of the bomber's relatives, three months prior to the 7/7 attacks. Patel claims he knows at least six other Muslims from Dewsbury, Yorkshire, who also went on similar training.

He said he had agreed to speak to the news of the World so that people "understand that Jihad is valid." "It is permissable but only in appropriate places and Britain is not one of them," he said.

Patel was arrested yesterday evening as he drove to his local prayer room (he is barred from Dewsbury Markaz mosque for his extremist views) by 20 anti-terrorist officers from West Yorkshire So13 Squad, who sealed the road and dragged him from his car. The dossier on his confessions was given to the unit by the newspaper. A police spokesman has said that a thorough investigation will be launched into Imran Patel and his activities.
