Bangladesh: Islamists Regrouping in Hills of Tangail

Tangailmap.jpgIt appears that the varied strands of Islamic terrorist organisations are starting to regroup in the hilly regions of Tangail district, according to varying reports. According to China People's Daily many of the Islamist militants arrested for their involvement with the national bombings of August 17, most of whom belong to Jamaatul Mujahideen, have confessed to being trained at a military school in the isolated areas of Tangail, and also at a number of madrassas there.

tangail.gifPolice admit that there is no direct information on the location of militants hiding in these areas, but this week, a JMB threat was made against Tangail Jail. The threat, made on Wednesday, stated that the jail would be attacked in "seven days time" if police did not desist from making arrests of JMB militants.

Tangail lies in the centre of Bangladesh, 62 miles northwest of the capital, Dhaka, so it is a logical lace to house a center of national operations for a militant, paramilitary group. The India Daily reports in a somewhat sensationalised fashion on the supposed Islamist HQ in Tangail. They even question whether Osama bin Laden may be hiding and recruiting from this region. "But sources and signal intelligence reaching India point towards a major al-Qaeda figure in Tangail district leading the Jihadists", the article concludes.

From Xinhua: A lot of strangers are seen wandering in the remote areas in the district, some 98 kilometers northwest of Dhaka, and "the strangers seem embarrassed when locals want to know their identities." The Daily Star reported Saturday that:

Our Tangail correspondent Mirza Shakil reports: Local sources said a lot of strangers are seen wandering the remote char areas, including Hugra, Katuli and Nagarpur, along the Dhaleswari river, and the isolated hilly areas of Ghatail and forests of Madhupur and Sakhipur......

Two persons, including a member of the intelligent unit of JMB, were arrested on June 13 in the Nagarpur char area soon after they blasted two bombs for experiment.

However, Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP) Mirza Abdullahil Baki said he has no information that militants are hiding in the char areas.

Meanwhile, according to the Daily Star, there has been a discovery of a large arms cache in the district of Bandarban. 2500 bullets, two .303 rifles, 40 AK47 magazines and firearms-manufacturing materials were discovered buried in the remote hilly region of Naikkhongchhari on Friday morning.

Acting on a tip-off, the Bangladesh Rifles went on a hunt for an arms stash at the hills of Horinjhi in Dochari Upazila, but by the time they arived, the weaponry had been removed. The BDR then started digging in the Horinjhiri Hill and recovered the cache.
