Sweden: Malmo Mosque Set Ablaze for Third Time

For the second time in five weeks the mosque in Malmo, Sweden (pictured) has been attacked by arsonists. We reported the last incident, which took place on September 18, when only minimal damage occurred in the arson attack, which was caused by a bottle of accelerant, thrown through one of the windows. The mosque was severely damaged in 2003 in an arson attack which damaged the mosque and destroyed adjoining buildings at the Islamic centre.

Now, a report from Sweden's The Local states that yesterday, shortly before midnight, several fires were started in the main building, which were quickly extinguished by emergency services. Passers-by had alerted them after seeing smoke. One man was admitted to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. He had been sleeping in the building during Ramadan.

A window had been smashed at the rear of the mosque, for the arsonist to gain access. Lars-Olof Anderberg of Skane police stated that the attack bore all the same hallmarks as the last fire, and suggests the attacks may be perpetrated by the same individual. Malmo is some 382 miles south of Stockholm, and has a high population of Muslim residents.
