Tajikistan: Ban on Hijab

From Jurist Law. One of the more surprising moves in the current saga of the hijab, or Muslim headscarf, comes from Tajikistan. Yesterday, the Tajikistan Education Ministry benned the wearing of the hijab in secular schools. Abdudjabor Rakhmonov said that the wearing of the jijab violated the country's education laws, and its constitution.

According to Al Jazeera, Abdudjabor Rakhmonov was concerned that many students spent time in mosqyes at the expense of their education. "Many spend evenings in mosques and do not do their homework," Rakhmonov said, adding that during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan many did not attend classes after Friday prayers."

What is surprising is that the population of Tajikistan is 90% Muslim, though its constitution is secular. Tajikistan's southern border runs against Afghanistan, and it is bounded by Uzbekistan in the west, and China in the east, with Kyrgyzstan in the north.
