Egypt: Islamic Protests Against Christian Play - Three Now Dead

The violence which happened outside the Coptic Christian St George's Church in Alexandria has now claimed 3 lives. We described the situation yesterday, but perhaps it is time to examine the history of the controversial play, "I Once Was Blind But Now I See", which has aroused such anger.

According to Islam Online, reviewing a DVD of a performance, the play is about a Christian who "reverted to Islam and is exhorted by a sheikh to kill priests and destroy churches. Abused and maltreated by the sheikh and his group, the young man eventually abandons Islam. The play further mocks at the bases of the Muslim faith."

The BBC reports that the sale of the DVDs have created an escalation of the rage, On Wednesday, protests against the sale of the DVD version led to a nun being stabbed. The nun, according to Al Jazeera, was a novitiate who was seriously wounded in the assault, which took place inside St George's church. A man was later arrested. The leaders of Egypt's Coptic Christian Church have argued that the play is not against Islam, but against extremism. The Kuwaiti News Agency reported on October 15 that the secretary of the Coptic Pope saying that the play had been suspended two days previously, as it showed a character playing the role of a terrorist.

Yesterday's escalation of the violent protests followed on from last Friday, when 200 police were drafted to the church to manage a demonstration of 3000 Muslims outside St George's church. The play was already on sale in DVD format, distributed by Christians, according to Al Jazeera from October 15. Al Jazeera stated that accusations of forced Islamic conversion from Christianity are "routine" in Egypt. The report mentioned a case from December last year when Copts protested in Cairo for four days when the wife of a priest left home, becoming a convert to islam. She returned home later and resumed practicing as a Christian.

Today's Al Jazeera report states that in the current violence, where church windows were smashed and rioters set fire to a police car and damaged other vehicles, hurled stones at police, wounding 20 of their number, the first death was of Mohammad Zakariya, who died in hospital from his injuries sustained in the clashes. Two others were killed after midnight, when police opened fire at the rioters. 70 rioters were hurt in total.

5000 rioters had arrived for the protest, coming shortly after Friday prayers from nearby mosques. The DVD is not of a new performance. It is a recording of a performance made at the church in 2003.

According to the BBC:

Relations between Muslims and the Coptic minority - which makes up 5%-10% of Egypt's population - are generally calm, although tensions sometimes flare.

Copts remained the majority in Egypt for centuries after the 7th Century conquest of the country by Muslim armies.

Nowadays, they complain of discrimination in the workplace, restrictions on church construction and periodic fears that Christians are being forced to convert by Islamic extremists.

The fact that the protests by Muslims both appeared after Friday evening prayers, last Friday (14th) and yesterday (21st), seems to indicate that the campaign of intimidation is, if not being actively organised from the mosques, not being discouraged by Alexandria's clerics.
