UK: "Discriminatory" Holy Book To Be Banned By University
Edinburgh University has decided that a religious text is "discriminatory" and will have it banned from its student halls of residence. The action came after a campaign was led by the students' association, and, according to a university spokesmen, it is in keeping with its pursuit of "evenly supporting all faiths".
The discriminatory book is not the Koran, which advocates killing of unbelievers, but the Bible, in the version planted in student rooms by the Gideons.
The students' association comprises students from 120 countries, and Ruth Cameron, president of Edinburgh University Students' Association said: "The student association strongly believes in the importance of ensuring that students of all faiths feel at home in their university accommodation".
She said the move was not about attacking Christianity, but about respecting diversity. Two years ago, the Times reported, the saying of prayers at graduation ceremonies for similar reasons.
The current veto on Gideon bibles needs first to be voted on by the student association and then is expected to be automatically approved by Edinburgh university.
Stirling University tried to remove 6,000 Bibles from its student halls earlier this year, but was halted by protests from Christians.
