Thailand: Conflict and Fear - Muslim Killed in the South by Islamists
Today, the New Zealand Scoop reports that the Thai prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, rebuked the secretary general of the Saudi Arabian-based Organisation of Islamic Conference for its criticisms of his military crackdown in the southern Muslim provinces. Thaksin, a Buddhist, said
"I would like him to read the Koran which stated clearly that all Muslims, regardless where they live, must respect the law of that land.....This means the Koran wants Muslims to live peacefully with people of other religions."His comments were aimed at Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, who had written a communique which condemned the deaths of Muslims, but did not mention the Buddhists who have been killed in the region by Islamists. The statement, issued from Jeddah, mentioned amongst other things: "Some villages have been under siege, and some families had to migrate,". a reference to the 131 Thai Muslim refugees who crossed the border into Malaysia, an event which has created diplomatic unease between Thailand and its neighbour.
In one of the southern Muslim provinces, Pattani, the Khaleej Times states that human rights abuses are taking place, with unfounded persecutions of Musims being carried out in the name of Prime Minister Thaksin's emergency powers, which were introduced in July, and have recently been extended for a further three months with parliamentary approval.
In Yala province, a Muslim volunteer security guard was shot dead by suspected Islamist insurgents. 46-year old Madaming Samae was riding his motorcycle to the school where he worked as a night guard, when gunfire from a passing pick-up truck killed him. His pistol and assault rifle were taken. Channel News Asia quoted police who said the shooting appeared to be linked to the unrest that has continued in the region since January 2004. The police did not rule out the possibility that he was killed in a personal conflict with his assailants.
It has been announced that Thaksin Shinawatra will be meeting former prime minister of Malayia, Mahathir Mohamad, on November 21, in a conference that will aim to reduce the tensions over border issues, the Bangkok Post reported.
