India: America, India, on the Verge of Landmark Nuke Deal
The United States does not have the kind of treaty it is preparing to sign with India with any country. This may be the next step on a potentially deep and long-lasting alliance between the United States and India (the first step towards that alliance might have been taken by India here.) This is, overall, very good news: India and US iron out nuke deal
A top US official is holding talks in India to push forward a landmark nuclear deal between the two countries.US Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns is meeting Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran in Delhi.
In July, India and the United States agreed to co-operate in civilian nuclear energy programmes.
It was a boost for India, which has not signed the non-proliferation treaty. In return, Delhi agreed to separate civilian and military facilities.
It also said it would place the former under International Atomic Energy Agency norms.
"This co-operation that we are extending to India is unique to India," Mr Burns said ahead of his visit.
