Iraq: Journalist's Kidnappers Were Shia Muslims

The Khaleej Times has reported today that the Irish journalist who was kidnapped by gunmen while on assignment for the UK Guardian, was kidnapped by Shia Muslims. Roy Carroll has been confined in a darkened room, handcuffed, for 36 hours before being released on Thursday evening.

Carroll's release came after a phone call to his captors. He thanked members of the Iraqi, Irish and British governments. He stated that after the telephone call:

"He put me in the boot of his car and drove me alone and dropped me in the middle of Baghdad," he said.

Speaking about his kidnappers, Carroll said: "They were Shia. At one point I was told I would be used as a bargaining chip in exchange for al-Sadr people taken in Basra."

The issue should now be investigated. Maverick Shia leader Moqtada al-Sadr had specifically arranged a meeting for Carroll to interview a Shia victim of Saddam Hussein. Gunmen knew that he was visiting the victim, and kidnapped him from that location. The claim that he was being used as a bargaining chip to free Shia prisoners must now surely point the finger of suspicion at al-Sadr, for his potential collusion in this affair.
