Australia: Melbourne Muslim Women Are Targets of Hatred

The Herald Sun reported earlier today that in Victoria, and particularly in Melbourne, Muslim women in headscarves are being targeted for abuse. In the past fortnight, two women have been assaulted. In one case, a woman with three children was waiting at a tram stop when a milkshake was hurled at her.

In another, a man swerved his car towards a woman who was crossing the road with her baby and shouted "F*ck off terrorist!".

Graffiti has appeared in the northern suburbs of Melbourne stating "Kill Muslims" and "Muslims Out". Other instances involve women being spat at and verbally abused.

The Islamic Council of Victoria is alarmed, and head of the Equal Opportunity Commission Dr Helen Szoke has said that she was appalled by the attacks.

"We recognise that people are fearful about terrorism," she said. "But fear cannot be used as an excuse to attack fellow Australians who want nothing more than to go to work, send their kids to school, go to the shops and go about their daily lives without being abused and attacked."
The resentment against Muslims climbed after the incidents of 9/11, and have now peaked again since the recent blasts on Bali.

The article makes no mention of the strict rulings in Victoria regarding religious discrimination, introduced to appease Muslims, which prevent anyone criticising Islam openly, which may be contributing to this climate of frustration and resentment.
