Turkey: 40% of People Polled Support Honour Killings

Turkish law, which used to treat "honour crimes" with leniency, has been readjusted to fall in line with European standards, in preparation for its attempt to become a full member of the EU.

The BBC describes an opinion poll, carried out by a Turkish university, conducted amongst residents of Diyarbakir, in the south-eastern part of the country. 430 people were polled, mostly men. When asked what the appropriate punishment should be, for a woman who had committed adultery, 37% of respondents answered that she should be killed. 25% thought that she deserved to be divorced, and 21% replied that her nose or ears should be amputated.

Since last summer, the penal code has been reformed, so it is no longer permissable for a man to claim "provocation" as a defence in so-called "honour crimes".

Recently, an Istambul court handed out a life sentence for a brother who killed his sister for having a child while sill unmarried. The young woman was still in her hospital bed when the brother arrived and shot her. He was sentenced on Friday 14th October.
