UK: Clarke's Detained Islamists Set Free by Court

We mentioned earlier that Abu Qatada and six other people detained by Home Secretary Charles Clarke, prior to their being deported to their countries of origin, had appealed against their incarceration. Qatada and the six others, who were only described by letters of the alphabet in press reportings, were appealing to the Special Immigrant Appeals Commission to be released on bail.

Now four of the detainees whom Clarke had intended to deport have managed to gain bail from the Special Immigrants Appeal Commission (SIAC), according to Xinhua. The individuals, A, G, H and T, who are Algerian, have been granted bail, pending the outcome of their appeals against detention under the UK's immigration laws.

SIAC Chairman Justice Ouseley said the key considerations in granting bail were whether the men would abscond and how they would react to the impending agreement between Britain and Algeria that would allow for their deportation.
Abu Qatada and five others were refused in their applications. The case of a tenth individual, B, has been adjourned.

Hazel Blears, Home Office Minister, said the government was "disappointed". Canoe News reported Ms Blears as saying "It remains our view that these individuals represent a real risk to the national security of this country and should continue to be detained." She added that British authorities "remain committed to pursuing their deportation" to Algeria.

The Times states that the strict bail terms mean the four men will be under virtual house arrest. During daylight hours, H will be allowed outside for two hours. He has been on suicide-watch in HM Prison Belmarsh, and is married to a British woman. A, with 5 children, has also been on suicide watch, and G tried to hang himself last month because the "spirits were telling him to commit suicide". T has had militant training in Afghanistan, and is the only one of the four not to have been previously detained in Britain.
