Denmark: Newspaper Threatened by Islamists

A report from the Copenhagen Post describes the problems that have arisen, after the newspaper Jyllands-Posten ran an illustration competition. We mentioned earlier how Kare Bluitgen, an author of a book on Islam and the life of the Prophet Mohammed, could not find any illustrators willing to provide pictures for his work, lest they met the fate of Theo van Gogh. The newspaper duly showed 12 pictures, mostly of a humorous cartoon nature. We are daring to show one of these illustrations here.

Since the publication of the competition and its results, a website has appeared with four poster-style images in a collage form. The images from the site can be found here. The website in question has previously borne threats to Sweden, but now posters feature a map of Denmark covered in blood, with captions such as "Death will visit Denmark", "the Mujahadin have numerous targets in Denmark ", and "Very soon you will regret this". The front page of Jyllands-Posten features prominently on the website. The images are posted in the name of "The Glory Brigades in Northern Europe".

Though a single individual, or a small group of people, may turn out to be responsible for the internet threats, terrorism researcher Anja Dalgaard-Nielsen from the Danish Institute of International Studies warned against not taking the propaganda seriously. She said Al-Queda and its sympathisers had taken the internet into their service.
She noted that the text was homemade, and its language more direct and less florid than the language used on real Al Qaeda sites. 14 days ago, Italian intelligence services announced that a Moroccan group with Al Qaeda connections were operating in Scandinavia.
Soren Hove, terrorism researcher at the Odense University, said the message displayed in the collages was so threatening that it should be investigated by the police. On the other hand, he said, such anonymous threats should be taken with a grain of salt.
In an update to this entry - The BBC have an article on the issue, in which it states that on Thursday, (20 October) "the Jyllands-Posten reported that two illustrators who produced the cartoons had received death threats."
