US: Schumer the Terrible Attacks Economic Liberty

The vitality of our economies and the superiority of our technology are remarkable advantages we should use in our war against Islamic supremacy. That's why demagogues like New York State's Charles Schumer can do so much damage to our ability to win this war.

First: Schumer calls on Roche to allow others to make Tamiflu

WASHINGTON, D.C. - As experts predict a shortage for Tamiflu, the only known effective Bird Flu antiviral for humans, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, announced yesterday that 2.79 million upstate New Yorkers would be left without treatment should an outbreak occur.

During a conference call with reporters, Schumer said he is demanding that the Swiss drug giant Roche, which has the exclusive right to produce Tamiflu, sub-license production to five U.S. companies in the next 30 days.

Schumer's call comes on the heels of worldwide concern that this particular strain, also known as Avian Flu, may soon develop into a deadly pathogen in humans and cause a horrible epidemic in the U.S. and throughout the world with little ability to treat it.

That is, Roche is being punished for its remarkable success in developing Tamiflu--no good deed goes unpunished. (Don't be fooled by the verb 'calls' used on the story; Schumer didn't 'call', he threatened Roche.)

Second: A few minutes ago on Fox News, Schumer renewed his accusation that Oil companies were 'price gauging.' Neil Cavuto ask for his evidence on the matter, and Schumer said (I quote from memory): "When Katrina hit, prices went up on California and [...] places which do not get a drop of oil from the Gulf Coast."

That had the immediate effect of sending me to the keyboard. Let me say this again, in case somebody is listening: oil is traded in the open market, and--more importantly in this case--refinery capacity is limited, in part thanks to the effort of Senators like "Chuck" Schumer. Thus, of course Hurricane Katrina affected prices in California.

Finally, I hope the reader will forgive me a lament: why, oh why? Why must we be cursed why these officials?
