Afghanistan: Islamist Destroyer of Buddhas is Elected

We mentioned earlier that the initial counts of the September 18 Afghan election showed that many Afghan warlords were likely to fill seats in the Wolesi Jirga or parliament. Two province's data have been fully counted.

Now, according to the Guardian one of the two people guaranteed a seat is Mawlawi Mohammed Islam Mohammadi, who was the Taliban governor of Bamiyan province. He was in power when the Taliban destroyed the famous Bamiyan Buddhas (pictured). He fled north when the Taliban were routed, and returned to stand for election in Samangan province, and won.

The Buddhas had stood for 1500 years, greeting travellers along the SIlk Route, but were destroyed in seconds with explosive charges, because the Taliban's narrow Deobandi doctrine found them idolatrous and anti-Muslim. Beautiful photographs of the Buddhas before the Taliban reduced them to rubble can be found here.
