Uzbekistan: Banned by Islam, Bigamy Thrives
The Russian news agency, Interfax has a feature today on the issue of bigamy in Uzbekistan. It has even become currently popular, according to Elena Kurdryavtseva of the UN Development Fund For Women. Her comments have been backed up by research undertaken in the Fergana Valley. The reason for its continuation is economic.
Interfax describes the case of Sayera Gulmatova of the Andijan region who, to support her family, has remarried a rich businessman, Muhamadjan Zoirov.
She has not divorced her first husband and is still in lawful and registered matrimony with him. At the same tame, Zoirov is regarded as her lawful spouse because she is betrothed to him according to Islamic canons as their marriage was contracted by a mullah. The second husband had bought her an apartment and supported her children from her first husband. The latter has to reconcile himself with this state of affairs.The article, quoting Russian newspaper Novye Isvestia, states that as well as being against Islamic traditions, bigamy is also traditionally frowned upon in Uzbek culture.
