Indonesia: Islamic Schools to Undergo Inspections
A report today from Al Jazeera announces that Indonesia will be cracking down hard on Islamic schools which breed terrorists, according to a statement by the nation's vice president, Yusuf Kalla.
"Almost all the people behind the last four terror attacks came from a hardline group that studied at certain Islamic boarding schools," Yusuf Kalla told reporters late on Wednesday.Al Jazeera states that moves to monitor madrassas may cause suspicion, as the former dictator Suharto, seeing political Islam as a threat to his rule, kept a vigilant control on mosques and schools, until he lost power in 1998."Out of the 17,000 boarding schools (in Indonesia) there are one or two, I repeat one or two, that are extreme and not in line with the teachings of Islam. We will have to investigate and control (them)."
Kalla did not list any exact schools, but the Al-Mukmin and Al-Islam schools have attracted attention recently, as several terrorists graduated from them, including terrorists involved in the 2002 Bali bombings, and the bomb attack on the Marriott hotel in Jakarta, which killed 12 people. The Al-Mukmin school was founded by the imprisoned cleric Abu Bakar Bashir.
