Israel: Livestock Thefts During Ramadan

The Israeli newspaper, Arutz Sheva has reported that during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the Negev district police have confirmed reports that there has been a rash of thefts of sheep and calves, and are attributing this to the upcoming religious festival of Eid. The police say the creatures are stolen mainly at night, and are then taken to the autonomous Palestinian Authority areas of the Hevron hills.

It is believed that the animals will become slaughtered for the feasts that accompany the festival of Eid. Eid-ul-Fitr is where the official fasting of Ramadan comes to an end, and those who can afford it will often have huge banquets, where lamb, veal and other foods are served up to guests.
