UK: Muslim's Pig Ban to be Reviewed! Piglet and Pooh Reprieved!

We brought you the sad news that workers in the benefits department of Dudley Council, in the West Midlands, were given an edict to remove all images of pigs from their offices, after a complaint was made by a Muslim worker.

The offending images included anything porcine - calendars, toys, and most hurtful of all to British sensibilities - a box of tissues emblazoned with an image of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet! At the time, a Muslim Councillor who supported the ban, Mahbubur Rahman, stated: "It's a tolerance of people's beliefs."

Well now it seems that sanity is prevailing in Dudley Council, after this and other weblogs have ensured it has become an international laughing stock. Today's Express and Star has announced that race equality rules are to be reviewed. Council leaders have said they will not accept "extreme forms of political correctness".

Councillor Ms Pat Martin said to a packed council meeting

"I fully support the actions by management to respond to the concerns from colleagues following established and approved procedures.

"However I'm satisfied these procedures need to be reconsidered to make them compatible with the current law on what's deemed to be offensive in the workplace. Therefore I've ordered an urgent review of the procedures.

"In Dudley we rightly pride ourselves on being fair and reasonable employers but we will not accept extreme forms of political correctness."

She said that the current rules could lead to a soccer-team scarf being removed if a colleague claimed it was offensive. The ban on pig-related images had only affected the benefits office in Ednam Road, but a worker there claimed the ban had seen ornaments which had been on desks "for years" being removed. The worker, who did not wish to be named said the affair had caused "a bit of an atmosphere in the office". The Express and Star did not provide any comments from the Muslim woman who first complained, and initiated the ban.

Another member of the council, Mike Williams, the head of finance, had said earlier that it "did not matter why it was considered offensive". Even though he appears to have supported the ban, at the time of its inception he had acknowledged that some members of the department saw it as "political correctness gone barmy". If he acknowledged that - why did he go along with the daft proceedings?

That is certainly news that MajorBaby will appreciate! She's just 2 1/2 and a huge fan of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet.

What a silly idea this whole things was!

See you on the high ground!
