India: Hindu - Muslim Riots: Politicians Arrested

We brought you news of the small town of Mau in Uttar Pradesh, where on Friday, riots erupted between Hindus and Muslims, and how yesterday the trains had been diverted, even though the riots themselves had subsided.

Today, the curfew has still been in force, according to the Times of India, with water, milk and medicines being distributed in the seven most sensitive localities.

Observing that the situation was not yet conducive for relaxing curfew, District Magistrate Mukesh Mishra said "curfew was not likely to be relaxed until the action against anti-social elements under the Goonda and Ganster Act was completed and their arms licenses revoked.
500 people have now been arrested, the Times stated. Some of these have been politicians, according to the BBC, the most prominent being Mukhtar Ansari, and others from the Bharatiya Janata Party. Ansari protested his innocence, and told the BBC that he had tried to pacify the people and take the injured to hospital. He demanded that the federal agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation should be examining the case.

The New India Press is unashamedly calling Ansari a "mafia don turned politician". It claims he has some 36 criminal cases pending against him, and he was convicted under the anti-terrorist law TADA. Ansari has been claiming a "conspiracy" is behind his arrest, and did not rule out a collusion between the BJP and the ruling Samajwadi.

"While BJP leaders have always been my foes, even the local Samajwadi Party leaders don't relish my popularity, that is why they thought of framing me in the murder of some innocent person who was killed on the first day of the violence", he said.

"I want to know why the police took four days to name me if their allegations about my going on a killing spree with my gun in an open jeep were true?" Ansari asked.

He added:"I have won with very large margins in successive elections in Uttar Pradesh. Obviously I have a large support base among Hindus, so why should I incite a communal riot?"

The Indian Expess describes the effects the situation has had on morale in Uttar Pradesh and India, which felt it had seen no more Hindu-Muslim rioting and violence since Gujarat in 2002.

The past few days in Mau have shown us why communal violence and how to prevent it should be a national priority. The trigger in Mau, as it often is, was incidental. Violence erupted over the organising of Dussehra celebrations, traditionally held peacefully in this eastern UP town. The killings and the violence have now been controlled after the Mulayam Singh government brought in a new team of officers in the local administration and deployed additional forces in the affected region but the questions will not go away. Was the government just irresponsibly unaware of the build-up of tensions, or did it criminally ignore it? How did it happen that a local MLA, Mukhtar Ansari, already notorious with 36 criminal cases against him and a conviction under TADA, could "take charge" of the town as it burned and later seethed under curfew? Actually, these questions can be pared down to a single fundamental question: what are the series of abdications that make up the vacuum which the likes of Mukhtar Ansari then rush in to fill?
