Israel: US States PA Candidates Must Renounce Islamist Violence

In a report from Arutz Sheva, the Bush administration has requested Mahmoud Abbas, the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, to bar members of terrorist organizations from taking part in next year's January elections, unless they renounce acts of violence.

The US is said to hope that such a request will reduce tensions between Palestinian groups and Israel, following the terror attacks at the weekend, which left three Israeli settlers killed and four others wounded. For his part, Abbas, who is part of Fatah, believes the best way to reduce the violence is to include Hamas groups in the government, thereby forcing them to comply with the rule of law.

Starting on Wednesday 27th October, Abbas will be meeting with US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, and on Thursday he will meet George Bush, followed by a conference with House of Representatives and Senate leaders, culminating with a meeting with US Vice President, Dick Cheney.
