The Whitehouse Ramadan Dinner

Fjordman's latest posting is a piece on the Fifth Annual Ramadan Dinner at the Whitehouse along with some previous Bush quotes on Islam. Fjordman comments, "If this man is the aggressive cowboy he is portrayed as in Europe then I dread the day the appeasers show up."

I dread the day the appeasers show up too, but Fjordman is being unfair and not politically savvy in his expectation that Bush publically treat Islam as the threat it really is. In the politically correct climate we live in today, few people are ready to accept the questioning of a belief system like Islam. If Bush strays too far away from the public's comfort zone when it comes to criticising Islam, he would hurt the Republican party to such a degree that they would have little hope of retaining the Whitehouse in the next election. Then Fjordman would end up with the real appeasers in the Whitehouse that he (and I) are dreading.

But does Bush have to go so far as to create a tradition of an annual Ramadan dinner at the Whitehouse for a faith that will destroy Western civilization if it has a chance? I say yes, even to that. These are very confusing times for Muslims and they were already hyper-sensitive about Islam and felt allienated before the War on Terror. What Bush is doing by holding the Ramadan Dinner at the Whitehouse, is demonstrating that Muslims are still seen as welcome and contributing members of society. It helps them feel safe enough to keep their options open, rather than close the ranks of the Ummah, stop cooperating in the War on Terror and become more willing to heed to the voices of the militant leaders. Gestures like the Ramadan Dinner is the only responsible thing to do unless we want to forego any hope of a peaceful resolution to the war between civilizations.

I agree. It is far better not to alienate both the centrist non-Muslims as well as the progressive Muslims. Taking too hard line of an approach only convinces most people that you are an extremist right winger and your message is completely lost.
