Russia: Islamist Butcher of Beslan Claims Responsibility for Nalchik
Shamil Basayev, the Chechen Islamist warlord, who infamously claimed responsibility for the massacre of 320 schoolchildren and adults in Beslan, North Ossettia, has now claimed responsibility for the outrage in Nalchik, Kabardino-Balkaria.
The Independent announces that Basayev made an announcement on a rebel website. I believe that website is the Kavkaz Center, which has become curiously inaccessible for the past few hours. One of postings has a picture linked from this site, and has been causing browsers to indicate they are still "loading".
The message on the "rebel site" states that Nalchik had been a success, but his fighters had sustained heavy casualties because of a serious information leak five days prior to the attack. This leak, the announcement claims, had led to an extra 1000 Russian special forces being drafted into the region. His figures differed from official sources given.
He claimed that 41 of his fighters had died but said they had killed about 140 members of the law enforcement authorities and destroyed several helicopters. The Russians say they killed 91 gunmen, captured another 36, and lost 35 of their own men and nine civilians. Basayev said that 217 "mujahedin" took part in the assault. It was revealed earlier that the rebels who partook in the Nalchik raid had not been Chechens, but had been locals. It is probable that they were related to the Jamaat Yarmuk group who have been active in Nalchik, battling police on four occasions over the past two years.
Shamil Basayev was born in 1965, and has claimed responsibility for atrocities at Beslan and Dubrovka, and he has ordered numerous suicide bombings. His body count is over 600 victims. Russia has offered a $10 million reward for him. He shot to international fame as a terrorist when he hijacked a Russian passenger plane in 1991, and demanded it be flown to Ankara, capital of Turkey. He made the world know through this act of the Chechen conflict. Turkish authorities allowed him to fly back to Russia without incident, according to the BBC
