Russia: Islamists Still Resisting in Nalchik - One Dead
We reported on the insurgent attack upon Nalchik, capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, and its aftermath. The city was sealed off, and it was thought that the fighting was over.
Today, according to the Independent, there was more violence as security forces combed the area looking for remaining Islamists holed up on enclaves around the city. A security officer shot dead a militant who drew his Kalshnikov rifle when discovered. The article states that a senior Russian defence ministry source has claimed that the Nalchik attack was a test-run for a bigger attack in the region of North Caucasus. Local families of the fighters have been demanding the release of fighters' bodies, to give them Muslim burial.
Under Russian law, terrorists are buried in unmarked graves and the deputy prosecutor general, Nikolai Shepel, said the rules would be upheld. But the president of Kabardino-Balkaria, the region where Nalchik is located, has said the bodies of "confused" fighters might be released so that "brutality does not beget brutality".Radio Netherlands has stated that two fighters were killed today in Nalchik. As well as the one who raised his rifle and was shot, another rebel had staged an attack upon a paramilitary police post. Some neighbourhoods are still sealed off, and reinforcement security officers have been drafted into the city.
The most recent report, from the Moscow Times, by Fatima Tlisova, a Nalchik Muslim reporter, states that in the hospital earlier, one suspected militant and one civilian died from injuries sustained in Thursday's clashes. The final death toll is now 137 people. Two militants managed to escape from police today, according to news agency Interfax. Tlisova wrote that a large crowd of relatives had gathered outside the regional prosecutor's office, where officials read out the names of 177 people reported missing since the attack, or who were provisionally reported dead.
They told a crowd of about 100 people dressed in mourning black that they would be invited to identify relatives' bodies only after undergoing questioning by investigators.Another group gathered outside the regional president's office to press for the return of the bodies of suspected attackers to their families for burial.
