Indonesia: U.S. Terrorism Envoy Challenged by Journalists
A State Department official runs into some sensitive folks: U.S. antiterrorism envoy challenged in Indonesia
A senior Bush administration counterterrorism official spoke on Tuesday about the need for "greater cooperation" in the fight against terrorism and said the United States considered its work with Indonesia as a "partnership of equals" - only to quickly discover that many Indonesians do not think Americans are cooperating or treating them as equals. Speaking at a news conference here, the State Department's coordinator for counterterrorism, Henry Crumpton, was peppered with questions by Indonesian journalists about why the United States had not given Indonesian authorities access to Riduan Isamuddin, better known as Hambali, who was captured by the CIA in Bangkok in August 2003. "He is Indonesian, he did his crimes in Indonesia; I think the Indonesians have the right to have access to him," one reporter said. Hambali, said to be one of the top lieutenants of the Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, is suspected of coordinating numerous terrorist acts, including the bombings of nightclubs on Bali in October 2002 that killed more than 200 people, most of them Indonesians.
I have the answer for the journalists: we don't trust the Indonesian Judicial system. We don't trust Indonesia, period. Although I must say, Mr. Crumpton wisely declined to say so.
