Thailand: Emergency Rule Extended in Muslim Provinces

Earlier today, Thailand extended the emergency rule in the three southern provinces for another three months, according to the Daily Star.

The provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala are predominantly Muslim, and the recent unrest which has fomented there for the past 22 months has claimed almost 1,000 lives.

The Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra declared on several occasions that the emergency rule would be extended, prior to the meeting of the cabinet, in which the decision was formalised. The measures had been imposed by decree in June by the Prime Minister. Under the terms of these emergency rules, suspects can be detained for up to 30 days without charge, searches and arrests can be undertaken without recourse to warrants, and phones can be tapped.
