Trinidad: Islamist Leader Released - Claims He Was "Set Up"
After the fourth bombing of late in Trinidad, which we reported happened on Friday night at a nightclub in St James, on the outskirts of Port of Spain, Yasin Abu Bakr, leader of Islamist group Jamaat-al-Muslimeen was arrested. He was released without charge on Sunday.
Today's Trinidad Express has a feature on Bakr, who is saying that his organisation will be helping to find the person or persons responsible for the people responsible for the recent bombs. He was talking at a press conference at his base in 1 Mucurapo Road, flanked by top lieutenants.
All of the individuals arrested after Friday's bomb were released without charge, and Bakr praised the police's actions during his questioning, saying they were "professional". He was allowed to keep his cell phone during his time in custody.
However, he is talking of suing the police because there was no evidence to link him or his co-arrestees for the bomb incident, which injured 10 people. The fact that he had taken part in a 1990 coup attempt, in which 20 people died does not, in Bakr's opinion, make him a suspect.
Bakr has claimed that he is the victim of a conspiracy on the part of enemies from "a certain political group" who conspired to have him arrested, and asserted that the recent bombings were racially motivated. He had, he claimed, a description of the bomber, but would not reveal details, as he said that would prevent him catching the suspect himself, using his organisation's "intelligence" to track the person down.
Omar, or Umar Mohammed, the man we mentioned earlier being arrested at Tobago airport on a flight to London, has also been released.
