US: Islamist Terror Threat Triggers Baltimore Alert
In various reports from today, it is revealed that the authorities in Baltimore shut down parts of Interstate 95, after reports of an Islamic terror strike upon either the Harbor or Fort McHenry tunnels. According to Newsday, the closures started at 11.30 and the traffic was allowed to pass beginning from 1.15 pm.
An informant living abroad had told Federal officials that an Egyptian islamist, living in the Baltimore area, had made a threat against a tunnel, but had not specified which tunnel. Maryland Department of Transportation decided to act on the information, and closed the harbor tunnel in both directions, and partially sealed the Fort McHenry tunnel, allowing only limited traffic. The stoppages caused widespread gridlock, but Gary McLhinney, the chief of Maryland Transportation Authority police defended the action, claiming:
"The number one priority is the safety of the citizens of Maryland who are traveling on our roadways. We will always err on the side of public safety. ... We have not found anything that causes us great concern at this point."ABC News stated that orange dump trucks were used to block the tunnels, in a joint federal, state and local security operation.
Interstate 95, which uses the Fort McHenry Tunnel, is a key north-south artery through East Coast states, stretching from Maine to Florida, serving cities including New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Interstate 895, which uses the Harbor Tunnel, is an alternate north-south link through Baltimore.
