Somalia: Islamic Militias Destroy Movie Editing Studio
In Somalia, militiamen from the Union of the Islamic Courts have stormed the studios of the country's largest translators of Bollywood films. On Monday the Islamic raiders at the Al-Fiqi studios threw television sets from second floor windows, smashed other screens, appropriated 1000 movie tapes and made the place of business inoperable, according to Xinhua. The head of the Union of Islamic Courts, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, admitted to reporters that his operatives had committed the attack:
"We've very proud that we closed down the biggest movie translating firm," he said, adding that these people have defied their orders.iafrica.com stated that six men had been taken away by the militia during the raid. As well as smashing TVs and dubbing equipment, cash was also taken. Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has long advocated that Somalia should become a sharia state. The BBC claims that the Islamic militia have recently destroyed among other targets, a kidnapping ring, drug dealers' hide-outs, and the equipment of home-made alchohol producers, and such actions against banditry have drawn support from the public in the lawless nation.The Islamic courts recognize most of the entertainment such as listening to music, dancing, watching movies and others as satanic activities and therefore unlawful.
Sharif Sheikh AHmed, who had vowed to be ruthless against Ramadan infringements, has admitted that just under $1000 of cash and items of jewellery had been seized with the other material, such as a computer and mobile phones. He stated that it would all be returned, with the exception of the films.
