US: Trial Date Set for Members of "LA Jihad"

We brought you below mention of the so-called "LA Jihad", where Levar H. Washington (25), Gregory V. Patterson (21) and Hammad R. Samana (21) are awaiting trial in Los Angeles, accused of planning shooting raids on LA area military targets. The three, along with the suspected leader of a radical Islamic prison gang called Jamiyat Ul-Islam-Is-Saheed, On August 31 2005 the men were subject to a US federal indictment of conspiring to wage war against the US government through terrorism, and using firearms in a crime of violence. Other charges included plotting to murder foreign officials.

The activities of the group came to light as a result of police investigating a series of robberies at gas stations. The Australian Daily Telegraph announced today that a trial date has been set - October 24, 2006, with a pre-trial hearing on October 16 2006.

According to KESQ News

Prosecutors contend the plot was orchestrated by Washington, Patterson and Samana at the behest of James, an inmate at the California State Prison, Sacramento, who allegedly founded a radical Islamic group (Jamiyyat Ul-Islam Is-Saheeh).

Samana is originally from Pakistan, but has US "permanent resident" status. James and Washington had met in prison, while Washington recruites Patterson and Samana at a mosque where the two worshipped in Los Angeles. The four had observed military establishments, and also the Israeli consulate, the Israeli El Al airline, and Jewish synagogues.
