Holland: Muslim Rage at Burka Ban

The Times reports that the ban on burkas, introduced by the Netherlands' Immigration and Integration Minister Rita Verdonk (pictured), has been met with predictable outrage by Muslims living in Holland. There are even fears that Ms Verdonk, a mother of three who will be 50 next week, will become the latest target for assassination.

Nick-named Iron Rita, Ms Verdonk, a former prison warden, has been accused of pandering to the far right. When film-maker Theo Van Gogh was murdered by Mohammed Bouyeri after he made a film on Muslim violence against women, a note was found skewered to his chest with a "hit-list" of infidels to be murdered, which prompted Somali-born MP Ayan Hirsi Ali and Geert WIlders into hiding. It was Wilders who recently suggested the ban on burkas.

The recent arrests of the Hofstad Group which included Mohammed Bouyeri, and which is believed to trying to assassinate Hirsi Ali and Wilders may be involved with a response to the ban on burkas being announced.

Verdonk, 50, the mother of two teenagers, has further outraged Muslims by expelling imams accused of promoting terrorism; defending a Dutch woman who ran over and crushed to death a Moroccan youth who had snatched her bag from her car; and cancelling a meeting with Muslim leaders who refused to shake her hand because she was a woman.

Another aspect of the crackdown was her order to revoke the residency permit of immigrants who commit petty crimes. Until recently the permits could be revoked only for serious offences like murder.
The Times states that there have been calls made for an investigation into the ban, including how it has been carried out in other countries. In Belgium, the mayor of Maaseik, Jan Creemers, imposed a local ban on burqas in December 2004, because they "frightened" non-Muslims. In Utrecht, where Ms Verdonk was born, unemployment benefits for those who insist on wearing burkas (thus making themselves unemployable), are reduced by 10%.

Verdonk's policies are tougher on immigration than the UK by far. The Times earlier listed the Netherlands' hardline positions:

  • Immigrants must pass an exam on Dutch language and culture before being allowed to move to the Netherlands. That does not apply to immigrants from US, Canada, Australia, Japan and other EU states.

  • Legal immigrants already there must take a Dutch language course at their own expense.

  • Immigrants guilty of any minor crime, such as shoplifting, during their first three years in the country can be deported.

  • People can bring in a husband or wife only once they are 24 years old, and do not depend on welfare benefits. The measures are aimed at curbing international arranged marriages.

  • 26,000 illegal immigrants are being deported, some of whom have been in the country for ten years and have established families.

  • Clampdown on foreign imams working in mosques. They must show their appreciation of Dutch values.

  • Keywords: Burka, burqa, hijab, hidjab
