India: Muslim/Hindu Riot Fears: Trains Diverted

We brought you below the story of the riot in Uttar Pradesh, between Hindus and Muslims. Since the riots started on Friday night in the town of Mau, they have created a feeling of unrest, according to the BBC.

As a result, passenger trains have been turned away from the town because of the fear of rioters. Eventually the rioting saw the death toll rise to seven. The BBC states that 250 people have so far been arrested, for rioting and breaking curfew orders.

Mau, near the city of Varanisi, is predominantly Muslim, and it relies on weaving for most of its income. The town is renowned for its woven silk. Shops have been closed for the past three days, and milk deliveries have stopped. The chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav, has said the riots are a blot on his two year term. He is also investigating reports that local politicians played a part in the initial riots. These came about when Muslims objected to a Hindu festival, and in consequence, Friday prayers were disrupted by Hindus using loudspeakers.

The situation has not erupted into violence again, but precautionary measures are still in effect.
