Algeria: Islamists Kill Two Policemen

A report today from Reuters AlertNet states that two policemen have been killed and a third injured by Islamist gunmen.

Armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles, the assailants fired on the policemen on Sunday night. The attack happened on Sunday night in Bouira province, 70 miles east of the capital, Algiers.

A referendum was held on September 29, which was to approve an amnesty for the militant groups in the country, who have killed more than 100,000 people over the past decade. Within hours of the referendum being approved in favour of the amnesty, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat announced on its website: ""The Jihad will go on ... we have promised God to continue the Jihad and the combat."

Within days, Islamists were once again killing, as we reported below.

Reuters AlertNet states that in the past the Islamist groups in Algeria have been traditionally active in their assault operations during the holy month of Ramadan.
