Israel: Islamist Leader, 3 Settlers Killed

In what has been the worst day of violence in Israel since August 24 this year, when 5 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli raid and Schmuel Mett, a young UK Orthodox Jew, was stabbed to death by a Palestinian, Sunday has seen a resurgence of violence.

Today, three Jewish settlers on the West Bank, outside Gush Etzion settlement bloc and Eli settlement were killed by Palestinians in drive-by shootings. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade claimed responsibility, states Reuters. The incident was in defiance of the cease-fire which had been urged by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Abbas is due to meet George W Bush this week to discuss reviving the road map to peace. Abbas had advised the ceasefire to enable a smooth pull out from territory on the Gaza strip which Israel had occupied for 38 years.

Arutz Sheva report that the militant who was shot by undercover Israeli Defense Force troops, south of Jenin, was 27-year old Nihad Abu Ghanem. He was the main Islamic Jihad terrorist of Burkin, a town close to Jenin. He had been shot on Sunday afternoon after firing on special IDF forces. According to Arutz Sheva, Abu Ghanem was the first Islamic Jihad terrorist to be killed since an air strike in the Gaza strip when two top leaders of the group were killed following a rocket attack on Sderot, near the border of Gush Katif.

Aged 22, Nihad Khaled Abu Ghanem was once portrayed as a victim in a report from the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, when he was evicted from a house in Burkin village on 28 July 2002 before it was bulldozed. The group he belonged to, Islamic Jihad or Palestinian Islamic Jihad (aka Al-Quds brigades, PIJ Shaqaqi Faction, PIJ-Shalla Faction) have, according to the US carried out

many attacks, including large-scale suicide bombings, against Israeli civilian and military targets. The group maintained operational activity in 2004, claiming numerous attacks against Israeli interests. PIJ has not yet directly targeted US interests; it continues to direct attacks against Israelis inside Israel and the territories, although US citizens have died in attacks mounted by the PIJ.

Since his death was announced Khaled al-Batsh, a senior official of the organisation, vowed on Sunday to avenge the killing. Al-Batsch claimed that the shooting was considered an escalation on the part of the Israelis. According to Xinhua News, Ghanem was a member of Saraya al-Quds, the armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
