Trinidad: Islamist Leader Arrested
On Friday night, there was an explosion in a bar in St James, on the outskirts of Port of Spain, Trinidad, in which 10 people were injured. This was the fourth bombing in four months. Six people have been arrested, according to News.Com.Au. Four of these were minors under the age of 18, who all gave their addresses as the headquarters of the radical Islamic group Jamaat al Muslimeen.
Another of the six is Yasin Abu Bakr, who was part of a group who tried to overthrow the Trinidadian government in a failed Islamist coup in 1990. With others, Bakr had bombed police headquarters and stormed the Red House (seat of government) and the national television station, TTT. The Prime Minister of the time, Arthur Robinson, had been shot in the leg, and more than 20 people had been killed.
Yasin Abu Bakr is not believed by police to be involved in the other three recent bombings, even though the type of explosives used appear to be of the same type in all four attacks. Jamaat al Muslimeen made a statement, denying all involvement.
Earlier this month, we reported on a man, Omar Mohammed, or Umar Mohammed, who was apparently detained in connection with suspected bomb production, who was about to board a plane to London, where he usually lives. He was questioned by Scotland Yard detectives, apparently in connection with the 7/7 London bombings.
