Britain: New Islamist Group Targets UK
A report in today's Sunday Times claims that a newly emergent group of Islamist radicals, linked to Al Qaeda and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, is targetting radical Muslim youth.
The group, apparently set up by al-Zarqawi, provides logistical support to fighters in Iraq. It is an offshoot of Ansar al-Islam, one of the groups recently proscribed by UK Home Secretary, Charles Clarke (see our Special Report).
According to the Sunday Times, Ansar al-Fath, or Partisans of Victory, aims to recruit fanatics from Britain to fight in Iraq. Already about 70 UK Muslims have gone to Iraq to join insurgents. It is believed that the recent arrests of ten people in Britain were connected to the Iraqi mission of war engaged in by UK-based jihadists.
The remaining five men out of 10 detained in anti-terrorism raids in Croydon, south London, Derby and Wolverhampton last weekend were released yesterday. Another was set free straight after the raids and the other four last Wednesday. Those released by police yesterday are now being detained by the immigration service.The group Ansar al-Fath were first mentioned in connection with al-Zarqawi by the head of the French police's counterterrorism unit, Christohe Chaboud, on Monday. An article sourced by Associated Press in Yahoo News relates how Chaboud states Ansar al-Fath were connected with the French terrorist Safe Bourada, of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat. We described below how Safe Bourada wrote the manifesto of Ansar al-Fath.
Recently, arrests have been made of suspects involved with Bourada. Claude Chaboud claimed that when Bourada returned from Lebanon he had a substance known as black cumin. This substance is apparently used in certain explosives, and was mentioned in an "in absentia" trial of al-Zarqawi and others in June in Jordan.
