UK: Race Relations Expert Explains Why Muslims Reject British Values

In an impassioned rant printed in today's Observer, A. Sivanandan (pictured) berates the recent moves by the Blair government to distance itself from the formerly hailed policies of multiculturalism.

Sivanandan's tirade is a far cry from the views of Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, who in September blamed multiculturalism for creating ghettoes within Britain's urban environments. Sivanandan is Director of the smaller and less-influential Institute of Race Relations, and thinks that the speech made on Friday by Margaret Hodge, which we described below was part of

a debate which has moved so far to the right that the gains made by the black struggle are being jettisoned. Even the term 'coloured' instead of 'black' is up for rehabilitation. What's next? The replacement of 'racism' by 'colour bar'?

Sivanandan seems to think it is perfectly acceptable to have cultural ghettoes in UK society, and like the politically correct political pundits of the late 1970s and 1980s falls upon the obvious target - it is the fault of the society for not changing enough to allow aliens to be alien in thought, word and deed. He even makes the preposterous claim that the 7/7 bombers were "integrated" into Britain's society.

First, in as far as the idea of segregation has validity, it applies not to the 7 July bombers, but to the generation of their parents, when it arose from racial segregation in public housing combined with the closure of the factories and foundries where they worked.

Second, all of the bombers were well integrated. Abdullah Jamal, formerly Germaine Lindsay, was married to a white, English woman; Mohammad Sidique Khan was a graduate who helped children of all religions; Shehzad Tanweer, also a graduate, often helped in his father's fish-and-chip shop; Hasib Hussain's parents sent him to Pakistan because they felt he had fallen into the English drinking- and-swearing culture.

Allowing oneself to be shipped off to a foreign country to learn manners is hardly a sign of integration into UK society. If you can stomach such indigestible fare, then I suggest you read Why Muslims reject British values". It is unadulterated propaganda, designed to confuse the liberal mind. And more importantly, it never begins to explain why Muslims who have chosen to live in Britain have chosen to reject the host nation's values.
