Afghanistan: Anger at Death of Murdered Mullah
We brought you below a report that Mullah Maulvi Ahmed Khan had been killed in a bomb attack in his mosque in Tani district, Khost province, Ahghanistan, along with 16 worshippers.
Today, his killing brought out 9,000 people in demonstrations of anger. The protesters have demanded that the Karzai government provide police protection for religious leaders. The violence against mullahs, which has seen the deaths of four other Imams during the summer, has been called "un-Islamic".
President Hamid Karzai has called the killing of Maulvi Ahmed Khan as "an attack on the religion of Islam," according to the Khaleej Times today.
Khan, a supporter of Karzai, had been active during the run-up to elections held on September 18. About 90% of the protesters were students. The demonstrations took place in several districts in Khost province. Khan had been the seventh victim of attacks upon clerics during the past five months, and the fifth to have died.
The elections, which were supported by Mullah Khan are the first for more than thirty years, and a key step on the road to full democracy for the country. Khaleej Times states that the results of the polling will be known by the end of the month.
