Book Review: Donald Kagan's The Peloponnesian War

A good history book, like a good flashlight, should bring clarity to even the darkest corners. But even fairly illuminated venues can use particularly bright lighting. The Peloponnesian War, that cruel affair, can always use better lighting.

Donald Kagan's the Peloponnesian War is one such book. Kagan combines well-recognized scholarship, clarity, and exceptional even-handedness in his volume. He manages to immerse the reader like few other historians can. He is aided, however, by the importance of the events he studies.

The Peloponnesian War, the war between Athens and Sparta for supremacy over the Greek world, had consequences none of the participants could have imagined. In its aftermath, one of the main powers fighting in it ended humiliated and in ruins, and the other one suffered a worse fate barely a quarter of a century later. The institutions that sustained classical Greece in its infancy were shattered forever. Leadership of the young Western World would fall to Macedonia, then Rome, never to return to Greece. All of this out of a war none of the two great powers really wanted.

Kagan expertly leads his reader through the battles, politics, and life of the participants. His reading of the participants strikes me as perceptive like few others. Thus, to be completely clear: this is one of the best history books I've ever read.
