Iraq: Voting Over, Polls Close
Despite reports of isolated incidents of violence, according to Reuters, where insurgents in Ramadi fought gunbatteles with Iraqi and and US forces, most of the voting appears to run smoothly. There was a high turnout of Sunnis, contrary to earlier expectations. Mortars landed near a polling station in Baghdad, and there were roadside bombs there and in other parts, but violence was far less than the US had predicted.
In January elections, 40 people died when more than a hundred attacks happened in one day, including suicide bombings.
Now, the polling booths have shut, according to the BBC. It will now take three to four days to count the "Yes" and "No" votes. Earlier, the Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari (pictured) registered his vote.
George Bush announced the vote had been "a critical step forward in Iraq's march toward democracy", and US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said the Iraqis were "investing in their future. Every time the Iraqi people have been given an opportunity to express themselves politically, they have taken it."
There was some gunfire in Baghdad at the close of the polls, but this was in celebration, not conflict.
The worst incident of violence in the day happened near the Iranian border, when three Iraqi soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb as their convoy passed by, east of Baquba. At least one civilian was killed and six were wounded in attacks on polling stations in Baghdad.
