India: Hindus and Muslims Battle in Uttar Pradesh

A report from Al Jazeera describes how a dispute between Hindus and Muslims in Uttar Pradesh has led to violence, with three people dead and 28 injured.

After the bouts of violence yesterday in the town of Mau, southeast of Lucknow, a curfew was imposed, but today the fighting resumed, a Home Ministry official announced. The cause of the clash was the desire of Hindus to stage a religious ceremony in a mainly Muslim area. As a response to Muslim objections to their ceremony, many Hindus used loudspeakers to interrupt Friday prayers, and that provoked violence.

Both sides hurled rocks at each other, wielded rods of iron, knives and other sharp objects as they battled for nearly two hours, the Home Ministry official, Alok Sinha, stated.

Two were killed in the inter-factional violence, and one person died when police used bullets to disperse the combatants. Four of the twenty eight injured were in a serious condition. The majority of injured have stab wounds. A shop was also burned in the fracas.
