Turkey: Two Fugitive Islamists Finally Receive Life Sentences

A breaking news item from JTA states that two members of an underground Islamist group have today received life sentences for their part in trying to assassinate a Jewish businessman, Jak Kamhi, in 1993. Three other suspects, the report says, were given life sentences more than 10 years ago, and another remains at large. The pair had tried to kill Mr Kamhi in his car, using a shoulder-fired missile, but fortunately were poor marksmen. The projectiles missed their target and Mr Kahmi was unhurt.

This case has taken so long to come to a conclusion because the two Islamists, Yasar Polat and Kamil Askin, had fled after the assassination attempt, which took place on 28 January 1998. Yasar Polat had fled the country. Their intended victim, Jak Kamhi was a founder of the 500th Year Foundation, according to a report from the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT). The others in the assassination plot, Can Ozbilen, Osman Erdemir and Ali Riza Bayramcavus were sentenced to life imprisonment. Another man, Ahmet Burak, was acquitted.

Yasar Polat, Kamil Askin and Ayhan Sag fled, and later Polat was extradited back to Turkey from Iran at the end of January, 2003, according to a report from Eurasianet. Polat and the others involved in the attempted murder of Mr Kamhi were all members of Islamic Great East Raider's Front. Kamil Askin eluded detection until his arrest on September 25 2004, according to HRFT. The others who had been convicted of the Jewish businessman's attempted murder had, ironically, been released about a week earlier. It seems that Ayhan Sag still remains free.
