Afghanistan: Mullah killed in Mosque Attack
According to a report from the BBC, a leading Muslim cleric has been killed with 16 of his congregation when a bomb struck inside his mosque. The explosive device had been secreted in the area reserved for the Imam at prayers, indicating that the imam was the intended target of the attack. Mullah Maulvi Ahmed Khan was about to lead afternoon prayers. The bomb was remote-controlled.
The incident occurred in Tani district, 18 miles south of Khost. Police chief Mohammed Ayub blamed the Taleban for the blast.Of the injured, six are reported to be critically injured. The Mullah was a supporter of the Kharzai government, and a member of the provincial Ulema council.
During the summer, attacks against clerics led to the deaths of four imams; two were killed in Kandahar, one in Helmand and one in Paktika. On June 1, 20 people were killed and 40 wounded when a suicide bomber detonated himself inside a mosque during a memorial service for Imam Mawlavi Abdullah Fayaz. Fayaz had been shot dead earlier that week.
