Holland: Police Raid - Islamist Suspects Taken, Gunshots Fired
In news from an hour ago, Reuters report that seven people have been arrested in anti-terror raids today. The people seized are suspected of plotting to attack politicians and government buildings. There were gunshots heard in the Hague, where the Dutch parliament has its seat. Whether anyone was hurt is currently unknown, states Reuters. Security at government buildings has been stepped up.
At least one of the arrests took place in the Hague, and all seven are said to be Dutch citizens, six men and one woman. Arrests were made in Almere, Amsterdam and the Hague. Samir Azzouz was among those detained. In April the teenager was acquitted of charges of conspiring to attack government buildings. When he was arrested before, in July last year, machine-gun cartridges, a bullet-proof vest, two fake bombs, a silencer and maps were found at his home. He was sentenced for illegal ownership of weapons for only three months jail at a Rotterdam court. However, not enough hard evidence remained to convict him of plotting bomb atrocities. He was freed because of the time he spent in custody.
Azzouz has been linked to the "Hofstad" group, a militant Islamist cadre that is said to be planning assassinations of politicians. They are linked to Mohammed Bouyeri, who murdered film maker Theo van Gogh on 2 November 2004. Twelve members of the Hofstad Group are awaiting trial for being "members of a criminal organisation and planning to kill prominent politicians".
