Holland: More on the Banning of Burkas
We brought you yesterday a story from the Times about the plans of Dutch Immigration and Integration Minister, Rita Verdonk, pictured, to bring in a ban on the wearing of the burka. I also mentioned that in Utrecht, people who wore the burka yet claimed benefits would be denied payments. That snippet came from a Dutch associate, and not the Times. However, today the Times brings details of the Utrecht burka veto.
Utrecht City Council voted for the withholding of benefits payments for unemploed Muslim women who, by not removing the burka, effectively made themselves unemployable. The city voted for the move the day after Ms Verdonk announced her decision to have the burka forbidden in some public areas, as a security measure. When Ms Verdonk made her announcement, Maria van der Hoeven, the Education minister, argued for the banning of burkas in schools.
Utrecht made the decision after two Muslim women receiving 550 euros (380 pounds) a month in unemployment benefits told the jobcentre that they did not attend job interviews because no one would employ them because of their burkas, which they refused to remove. An Utrecht city spokesman said that the women, who were educated and spoke good Dutch, were not being denied all of their benefits. Only 10% of their welfare will be deducted, as long as they insist on wearing the garments.
Ms Verdonk introduced the concept of banning burkas in public places at a meeting of the Netherlands parliament on Monday, according to Expatica News, after a request by right-wing independend MP Geert Wilders. He argued that the burka is not "woman friendly" and prevented the quick identification of the wearer.
